Jam Jars and Shooting Stars
My Nana, Adelaide, gave me a special gift on my sixth birthday: a pretty doll with a heart-shaped locket around her neck. Opening the locket, I found a note written in Nana’s exquisite copperplate handwriting: ‘Love Never Fails’. I was too young to understand the quotation, and as I looked up my enquiring eyes met hers. She simply winked at me; I knew, in the silence of that moment, that one day it would make perfect sense.
Adelaide recently passed away at the fantastic age of 95. I miss her very much, especially her laugh, her strongly held superstitions and her amusing observations on life. She absolutely refused to drink from a mug, proclaiming it would be like drinking from a jam jar. She also told me that, should I ever see a shooting star, I should wish upon it – just in case!
I treasure my locket and its secret wisdom; and as I follow life’s path of twists and turns, her words go with me always. Love Never Fails.
